Patrick Yuen first started experimenting with digital photography in the late 1980s with Sony's introduction of the first consumer digital camera called the "Mavica". The Mavica had a fixed lens, a flash, and stored it's .3 megapixel (640x480) image on standard 3.5" floppy disk. This resulted in almost unlimited storage capacity but it also meant a frustratingly slow image write time. Since those early days, digital photography has evolved leaps and bounds. With the introduction of the 6 megapixel Canon 10D digital SLR in 2003, digital photography is on its way to surpass film based photography in terms of "practical" image quality at an affordable price. Based on objective test, film still out resolved digital images but since digital images lack grain, it lends itself to a cleaner smoother looking image.

There is a difference between "technical" image quality and "practical" image quality. Technical quality is the measure of image resolution under high magnification. Although ISO 400 film is comparable to a 11 megapixel image, on a practical level, a 4 to 6 megapixel digital image will look better than film when viewed on a 4x6 or even 8x10 print.

In early 2002, Patrick Yuen began work on a comparison web site to highlight the differences between the Canon G2 and Nikon Coolpix 5000. At the time, these were the top two high end consumer digital camera on the market. Since its introduction, the site has been viewed by over 100,000 visitors worldwide and has been mentioned and referenced in numerous other photography sites such as DPreviews.com, Imaging-Resources.com, Steves-digicams.com, Techbargains.com, and many others.
